Aukana Buddha Statue undoubtedly, the most magnificent undamaged ancient image in the island.
It’s located to the west of the Kala Wewa (reservoir) and could be easily visited from Anuradhapura, Dambulla or Habarana. The statue is 46 feet in height and is overlooking the vast waters of Kala Wewa. Both the statue and the reservoir are believed to be done in the 5th Century AD by King Datusena, the father of King Kassapa who built Sigiriya. Earlier there has been an image house covering the statue but presently only remains of it can be seen. This is the most beautiful rock-cut standing Buddha Statue in the Island, if not the entire world.
A replica of the Aukana Buddha Statue could be seen in Colombo in front of the BMICH. |
